The National Council on Measurement in Education (NCME) and American Educational Research Association (AERA) Annual Meetings are taking place in Chicago on April 12–15 and 13–16, respectively. In this post, we put the spotlight on the NAEP Doctoral Internship alumni who will have a presence either virtually or in person as presenters or participants at the NCME and AERA Annual Meetings this year. We are proud of their contributions to education research and involvement as members of the NAEP R&D program community.
The theme of the 2023 NCME Annual Meeting is “Leveraging Measurement for Better Decisions.” As such, there are quite a few sessions featuring NAEP Doctoral Internship alumni that will be of interest to the NAEP R&D community. If you’re interested in NAEP research or are a NAEP Doctoral Internship alum yourself, we encourage you to attend and say hello at these NCME sessions:
- Tools For Analyzing NAEP and TIMSS Data in R Using Latent Regression
March 28, 1:00–5:00 pm CT
- This virtual half-day training course, featuring co-presenter Sinan Yavuz (2019 cohort), teaches how to conduct achievement analyses through both plausible values and latent regression approaches using the EdSurvey and Dire R packages. This training is more advanced and represents a step up from our NAEP Data Training, so we highly recommend it to former NAEP Data Training participants.
- Exploring Students’ Navigational Pathways in NAEP Process Data
April 13, 1:30–2:30 pm CT
- This in-person research blitz session, featuring co-presenters Jacob Maibach (2022 cohort) and Juanita Hicks (2018 cohort), uses process data to explore common nonlinear patterns of navigation through the 2017 NAEP grade 4 mathematics assessment with k-means clustering and latent profile analysis.
- Investigating Measurement Invariance in NAEP Student Questionnaire Index Items
April 15, 1:30–2:30 pm CT
- This in-person paper session, featuring co-presenters Xiaying “James” Zheng (2017 cohort) and Yichi Zhang (2022 cohort), presents a study applying the measurement invariance testing procedure developed for polytomous items and the Region of Measurement Equivalence framework to evaluate the practical significance of measurement noninvariance.
- Operation REQUISITE: Re-envisioning Educational Quantitative User Information: Shiny Interface to Explore
April 15, 1:30–2:30 pm CT
- This in-person demonstration proposes a framework to re-envision the reporting of finer-grained educational data that provides guidance on choosing the most useful visualizations to make better sense of quantitative data. Co-presenters Eric M. Ho (2022 cohort) and Juanita Hicks (2018 cohort) introduce a Shiny application using this framework to guide users and create these visualizations.
- A Use Case of Simulating NAEP-Like Data
April 15, 2:50–4:20 pm CT
- This portion of an in-person coordinated paper session follows a showcase of three R packages for simulating large-scale data with inherent complex survey designs, including item responses, survey responses, weights, survey attributes, and plausible values. Co-presenter Sinan Yavuz (2019 cohort) will share an example of NAEP-like synthetic data with simulation methodology included.
Many sessions at the 2023 AERA Annual Meeting (themed this year “Interrogating Consequential Education Research in Pursuit of Truth”) will also be of interest to the NAEP research community, and plenty of NAEP Doctoral Internship alumni will be presenting. Check out this list showing just how many NAEP Doctoral Internship alumni will be found as participants or presenters in the many conference rooms and virtual sessions of these 2023 Annual Meetings:
